KPMG's Private Client Update, July 2010: Residence for UK tax purposes

KPMG's Private Client Update, July 2010: Residence for UK tax purposes - PDF

Currently there is no single statutory test for residence in the UK. An individual who is in the UK for 183 days or more in a tax year will be UK resident. Someone who spends no time in the UK in a tax year is unlikely to be resident. In other cases HMRC and, if necessary, the Courts determine a person’s residence status from case law principles. Recent cases, such as that of Mr Gaines-Cooper, have attracted substantial media interest. This update is intended to provide a high-level summary of UK residence; it is not a substitute for professional tax advice.

Coalition Tax Policy – Capital Gains Tax Implications for High Net Worth Individuals - PDF

The proposed reforms to the tax system have raised concerns about the impact on the taxation of individuals in the UK and one of the key concerns surrounds the increase to Capital Gains Tax (CGT) rates. The Coalition's Programme for Government has done little to provide clarity as to the application of these changes and if you have assets which are standing at a gain, advice should be sought about maximising potential short-term opportunities which may be available.

Insight Tax - Spring 2010

Insight Tax - Spring 2010 - PDF

In this edition we focus on ‘dispute resolution’ and HMRC’s new collaborative approach to dealing with disputes. This should prove particularly insightful for any companies with ongoing tax disputes with HMRC and give an understanding as to what the HMRC approach is, and therefore how this should impact the taxpayer’s behaviour. We also revisit research and development tax relief and capital allowances as we are often surprised how many companies do not take advantage of the beneficial reliefs available to them. Finally we look at short term business visitors, a topic we are increasingly receiving questions on, and look at the tax implications of overseas business visitors to the UK that are often overlooked.

Insight Tax - Autumn/Winter 2009 - PDF

The content of this edition covers a number of issues that should be on your agenda and will affect most, if not all, businesses. We look at the online filing of corporation tax returns which will affect ALL Companies for periods ending after 31 March 2010 and will require a re-think as to the process surrounding the filing of tax returns. We also look at the VAT 2010 changes that become effective on 1 January 2010 - with the changes being implemented in just over a month it is critical you understand how your business will be impacted. Finally we challenge you to consider your transfer pricing policies and ask yourself whether legacy policies are still appropriate in rapidly changing economic times, and whether they can be reviewed and structured to be more tax efficient.

Everything Guide to Managing Costs

Everything Guide to Managing Costs - PDF

Knee-jerk cost-cutting actions may bring short-term benefits, but could leave your business too lean and ill-equipped to cope with changing conditions that may present revenue opportunities. As such, it’s imperative to understand how to optimise your costs rather than just to cut them. Businesses are increasingly being treated like consumers.
